Student Web Tool

The tool I selected is MarinaraTimer. http://www.marinaratimer.com/

This tool helps you manage your time so you can improve your work and project productivity.

I selected this tool because often times I have issues with my time management, as many students do. Sometimes I forget to take breaks, which stresses me out. Other times I have a hard time staying on tasks with the many interruptions we face in our daily lives.

This web tool is very easy to use. There are three options on the main page that clearly outline what each option is. You simply click it, and customize it if you chose one that isn’t preset. I chose the Pomodoro timer which gives you 25 minute blocks of time broken up by three five minute breaks. After the fourth 25 minute block there is a 15 minute break. The timer just started and I didn’t have to do anything else.

There are no examples of how people use this timer, but I believe it would be useful to break up any task from work, to school, to household work, to money management/bills.

I would use this web tool mostly for school. When sitting down to work on school work for hours on end it will help me remember to take a break while also reminding me to stay on task during the on task intervals. I could also use this professionally. For instance, at an office job it’s good to take a five minute break to move around a bit.

There are no privacy settings for this web tool nor do I believe there needs to be. It is a simple timer with no personal settings or information required.

One other thing I learned is that there are many student web tools that are designed to help students study. Some of them are complex, and some of them are as simple as this timer web tool.

Choice Tool

The tool I selected was Google+ https://plus.google.com/ The tool provides a way to discover new things and connect with people who are passionate about similar interests.

I came across this tool while researching the Google Tool options, and I really wanted to check it out after that. Connecting with people over shared ideas, interests or hobbies is something that I like to do, and this platform seems to be widely used and well organized.

The tool is fairly simple. The menu is listed on the left hand side, with more options for those menu items on the top. All it took to understand what each menu item was, was clicking on it.

People use this tool to share ideas, and connect with other individuals interested in those ideas. For example, people discuss business, technology and science, bouncing ideas off each other. Others use this to connect with people over something they love or enjoy. There are whole communities centered around specific television shows, bands, activities etc.

I think I would mostly use this tool personally, to make connections with people who like the same things as I do, but I never would have met in real life. I could use it to research and bounce ideas off other people for professional as well.

I want this tool to highlight my main interests and ideas, represent that I am a free and opinionated thinker, and that I also enjoy debate and discussion.

Though you sign into Google+ with your Google account there are additional options available on Google+ to protect your privacy. They are very similar to Facebook. Ie who can send you notifications, who can comment on your public posts, whether to allow geographic sharing. I want to use these settings. Whenever communicating with a wide audience over the web like this I believe it’s important to protect your privacy.

One other thing I learned is that Google+ isn’t just trying to copy Facebook as I believed previously. It’s more about interests and hobbies than Facebook is.

Google Tool

The tool I chose is Google Keep https://keep.google.com/u/0/

I use a lot of Google Tools. I hadn’t heard of this one, and I liked the idea of being able to save notes and reminders all in one place. I’m a bit obsessive over organization, lists and notes.

The most important thing I was looking for in this sort of tool was ease of use and a organized layout.

Like most of Google’s tools it’s very easy to use. After installing a Google web extension in my Chrome browser I was able to use all aspects of the tool. It’s very simple to add notes, lists, photos, and notes with drawings. There’s not really any guess work in using the tool.

Most people use this tool to help organize their daily lives, and to remind them of important tasks or appointments.

The tool allows the user to make shopping lists, task lists, important notes and blurbs to remember, save photos of items they like or save ones to remember for later, add photos with captions etc. All of these things can be used personally and professionally. Especially because everything is saved specific to your Google Account, so you can access your Google Keep across devices, and save your professional and business things to their separate accounts.

This Google tool shouldn’t say much about the user. It’s a private interface.

None of what is created on a user’s Keep is shared with any other user. It’s kind of like saving these things to your own computer, but instead it’s to your own Google account. You can adjust your Google account settings to adjust Keep’s settings.

There is an option to share items from your Keep, but that is the choice of the user. I definitely would want to protect my privacy with this because often times tools like these are used to organize and save our own thoughts, which is personal.

One other thing I learned is that Google has a lot more web tools than I was aware of. There were quite a few that I’d never even heard of that I want to try out now.

Social Bookmarks Tools

The social bookmarking tool I selected is Folkd at http://www.folkd.com . The tool allows users to save their bookmarks online, share these links with their friends, and see what links their friends have saved as well.

I selected this tool because I liked the idea of being able to share bookmarks socially among friends and all in one place. I really like the idea that the links are always there and you know exactly where to find them rather than scrolling through old texts or facebook messages.

A lot of people use this tool to share interesting links they’ve found and funny videos. However some people have been using it to share and promote their own web pages and projects as well.

I could use this social bookmarking tool both personally and professionally. I could use it to share links, as so many users do, of interesting and entertaining content. I could also use this to share my own web page’s video content, or funny pictures, to help promote a business.

I would like my social bookmarking tool to show case my dark and diverse sense of humor and personality.

I did not find much in the way of privacy settings. In this case I didn’t mind as much. Most of the profile information is optional to fill out, and I wouldn’t be sharing personal information on this web tool.

One thing I learned, or observed, was that social bookmarking tools are not that popular yet. It seems to me they haven’t quite taken off.

Social Network Tools

After reviewing a multitude of social network tools I decided to sign up on Badoo. https://badoo.com/ Badoo is a multi-lingual social networking site that allows its users to connect both locally and globally. It’s tag line is “Make New Friends, Chat, Flirt.”

I selected Badoo for my social networking site because it’s used globally, it’s about meeting new people in a mass media audience, and you can connect your other social networking profiles to it as you so desire. The most important thing to me was that it was easy to use, had many users, and could be used dynamically.

The tool is very easy to use. One feature I liked was that I could choose to either create an account using e-mail address and password, or I could sign in using Facebook. I really like that the two services are integrated, but I can still choose not to do so.

The main dashboard layout is easy to understand, and they use globally recognized graphics to represent certain things. Ie the cut out of a person in a circle usually tells a user that if they click there they can change their profile picture and other profile settings.

A lot of people seem to use the web site to meet new people and to chat. People also use it to find people who live nearby and have similar interests. I think this appeals to so many people because of how busy we are as people today.

I would not use this tool professionally. It is very much so made for personal use, and I don’t think it’s a social network that one could cross the two worlds in.

I would like my social networking tool to show that I am a creative and open minded individual. That I’m adventurous and like to try new things and see new places.

You can protect your privacy through a few settings such as whether or not to show distance, selecting who can view your profile, whether or not to show your online status, and whether to allow search by e-mail. You can also use invisible mode, and there is a separate area for you to load private photos so other users cannot see them. I definitely want to protect my privacy, and would utilize some of these settings. I still wish there were more.

One other thing I learned was that many social networking sites have failed and shut down. There were several that I was interested in only to find out that the links were dead and that the site no longer existed.

Web Tool #2 – Babbel

Babbel is an educational web tool that offers online lessons to learn 13 different languages. I chose this web tool because language is interesting to me, and the site layout is very friendly and visually appealing. It looks updated and fresh, rather than some web tools that look drab and outdated.

Babbel is very easy to use. During registration you choose what language you are interested in learning, and then your home page loads with that course. It shows your progress in the course on a bar on the bottom. You can add other languages as well. However, the full depth of courses for each language is not available unless you pay a subscription. I really liked that they didn’t ask me for my credit card information for the free version.

Most people use this tool for personal reasons. Either they’re interested in the language, or they’re thinking of traveling to the country where the language is native. I do not believe many people use this platform professionally.

I would definitely use this tool personally. I have a interest in languages, and it would be useful to use to brush up on my German, and to keep it fresh in my head, as I’ve forgotten much of it over the years.

As much as I am aware of how much is available on the web, I had not realized that a language platform was available where part of it is free. I thought this was really cool, and I’m excited to use this web tool.

Web Tool #1 – Lifetick

Lifetick is a web tool that falls under the category Organization and Productivity, and it helps you set and keep goals. I chose this web tool because I often have a hard time keeping track of everything in our busy world.

I found this web tool to be very easy to use. When first logging into your account Lifetick asks you to enter in your core values. There was a help button to further explain what they mean by core values. Core values are things such as lifestyle, career, family, or school. You could type in whatever your core values are that you would like to be focusing on. Then later when you create a goal, you choose what core value it falls under.

Next Lifetick immediately loads the goal form, so you can create your first goal. This was very easy to use and I really liked the format. Then it has a task feature for you to enter in the tasks/activities required to reach the set goal. I think this is especially helpful when you have many steps to take to achieve a goal.

People use this tool individually and organizationally. Individuals use it to set goals and dreams that are all their own, and it helps them track the tasks they need to complete and have already completed. Organizations use it to set goals that include two or more people. That way everyone can keep track of what tasks people have completed, and where they are at in achieving their end goal.

I would use this tool personally, but probably not professionally. I think it would help me organize and keep track of the things I want and need to accomplish, but I wouldn’t want to share that list with others.

One other thing I learned was that while Lifetick is a handy tool, their basic subscription doesn’t include as many features as some people would like. They charge for some of their additional features.

I think Lifetick is a pretty cool tool, but unless it was offered on mobile devices as well as desktop I don’t think that I would use it consistently.
